Rename Multiple files at once

When you download photos from your digital camera, they often have unrecognizable names. You can rename several similar files at once with the following procedure. This also works for renaming other types of files.

1.Open the My Pictures folder. (Click Start, and then click My Pictures.) Or open another folder containing files that you want to rename.
2.Select the files you want to rename. If the files you want are not adjacent in the file list, press and hold CTRL, and then click each item to select it.

3.On the File menu, click Rename.

4.Type the new name, and then press ENTER.

All of the files in the series will be named in sequence using the new name you type.

For example, if you type Birthday, the first will be named Birthday and subsequent files in the series will be named Birthday (1), Birthday (2), and so on.

To specify the starting number for the series, type the starting number in parentheses after the new file name. The files in the series will be numbered in sequence starting with the number you type.

For example, if you type Birthday (10), the other files will be named Birthday (11), Birthday (12), and so on.

I have lot more cool tips to share with you all... But unfortunately, this is my 5th thread of today and I cant share it until tomorrow. Let me wait... lol

Well, until then this is Arun, signing off from Minute Workers.

Have a pleasant day my dear friends.

Must Read Trick: How to Increase PC Speed to Maximum

Hello friends, i will share with you a collection of windows tweaks that will help you to achieve maximum system or PC speed. All want that their system will work as fast as possible so why always settle for normal things, now you are learning hacking and still using your PC or system like noobs or novice guys that really not fair. So lets spend 5 minutes and get best available throughput from your Operating system.

In this story i will share the following tricks to increase system speed:
1. Disable Autorun from all drives.
2. Speed Up Browsing speed (explore optimization).
3. Disable Indexing services.
4. Optimize Display Settings.
5. Speed up folder browsing.
6. Disable Unnecessary Services.
7. Remove annoying delete confirmation messages.

Disable Autorun from all drives

1. Go to START menu then go to RUN and type "gpedit.msc" (without quotes) and press enter.
2. Now here you will see two things first is Computer configration and second is user configuration, you to go to both one by one.
3. First go to Computer Configuration then Go to Administrative Templates and then to System.
4. Now find the Key "Turn off Autoplay". Double click on it. Now click on Enable and select all drive and click on apply. So for computer its done, now you need to do for your own Account.
5. Second go to User Configuration --: Administrative Templates --: System --: And repeat the 4th step again.

This will disable all the auto run from your system and also help you to prevent from USB and

pendrive viruses.

Speed Up Browsing speed (explore optimization)

When you connect to a web site your computer sends information back and forth. Some of this information deals with resolving the site name to an IP address, the stuff that TCP/IP really deals with, not words. This is DNS information and is used so that you will not need to ask for the site location each and every time you visit the site. Although Windows XP and Windows XP have a pretty efficient DNS cache, you can increase its overall performance by increasing its size. You can do this with the registry entries below:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters]
"CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001
"CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180
"MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000fa00
"MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000012d

Make a new text file and rename it to dnscache.reg. Then copy and paste the above into it and save it. Merge it into the registry.

Disable Indexing services

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don't search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:

1. Go to Start

2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components
6. Uncheck the Indexing services and click on next.

Optimize Display settings

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources.

To optimize:

1.Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced tab
6. In the Performance tab click Settings
7. Leave only the following ticked:
- Show shadows under menus
- Show shadows under mouse pointer
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and button.

Speed up Folder Browsing

This one is already covered by windows SP2 and SP3. But still i will share.
You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

1. Open My Computer

2. Click on Tools menu
3. Click on Folder Options
4. Click on the View tab.
5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
6. Click Apply
7. Click Ok
8. Reboot your computer

Disable Unnecessary Services

Because Windows XP has to be all things to all people it has many services running that take up system resources that you will never need. Below is a list of services that can be disabled on most machines:

Alerter
Clipbook
Computer Browser
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Fast User Switching
Help and Support - (If you use Windows Help and Support leave this enabled)
Human Interface Access Devices
Indexing Service
IPSEC Services
Messenger

Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (disabled for extra security)
Portable Media Serial Number
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security)
Remote Procedure Call Locator
Remote Registry (disabled for extra security)
Remote Registry Service
Secondary Logon
Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security)
Server
SSDP Discovery Service - (Unplug n' Pray will disable this)
Telnet
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
Upload Manager
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration (Do not disable if you use a wireless network)
Workstation

To disable these services:

Go to Start and then Run and type "services.msc"
Doubleclick on the service you want to change
Change the startup type to 'Disable".

Remove Annoying Delete Confirmation message

Although not strictly a performance tweak I love this fix as it makes my machine 'feel' faster. I hate the annoying 'are you sure?' messages that XP displays, especially if I have to use a laptop touchpad to close them. To remove these messages:
1. Right-click on the 'Recycle Bin' on the desktop and then click 'Properties'

2. Clear the 'Display Delete Confirmation Dialog' check box and click 'Ok'

If you do accidently delete a file don't worry as all is not lost. Just go to your Recycle Bin and 'Restore' the file.

Thats all friends, now you have a smart PC with maximum acheived speed without altering RAM or other stuff.

Computer Crash reasons

You may have heard of the ‘Blue Screen of Death’ but haven’t experienced it yourself. It is better to know the reasons behind this crash so that when it happens you are in a position to fix it. If you see on the screen “Fatal error:
the system has become unstable or is busy”, “enter to return to Windows or press Control+Alt+Delete to restart your computer. If you do this you will lose any unsaved information in all open applications”. This is the infamous blue screen of death. This could happen due to any of these following reasons:
  1. Hardware Problem: Computer consists of different hardware such as Printer, mouse, flash drive etc. Windows assigns an IRQ number for each of these hardware. When due to some reasons more than one hardware use the same IRQ this will result in a crash. In order to find if you have any hardware conflicts you can goto the ‘Device Manager’ in your computer properties. (Start-Settings->Control Panel –> System->Device manager), an yellow exclamation mark will be placed against the hardware that has a conflict. You can resolve this by selecting the device, uninstalling and reinstalling it again.
  2. RAM memory: When you upgrade RAM memory, if you have two unmatched RAM cards or a RAM card that is not compatible with your motherboard, then a “Fatal Exception Error” will occur when you start the computer. If you are technically savvy then you may try to fix this by going to BIOS settings and editing the ‘Wait state’ of RAM or you can replace the cards with the same speed and capacity.
  3. Hard Disk Drive: After using the computer for a few months or years, the hard disk gets fragmented with temporary files, or fragmented files. This will result in slowness of hard disk and may even result in computer crash eventually. You can maintain your harddisk by defragmenting your hard disk frequently and deleting unwanted files.
  4. Video Card: If you see “Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors” then it is due to the video card. To solve this reduce the video display resolution. You can do so by going to the control panel and display settings. Choose the correct screen resolution to match your monitor and change the color settings to 16 bit or match it with your monitor.
  5. Virus: Most of the computer crash is due to Virus infection in your computer. You should install or enable windows firewall and install an Anti virus application to prevent unwanted virus applications infecting your computer.
  6. Printer: Sometimes you may notice that the computer crashes whenever you try to print something. This is due to low memory buffer in the printer. Therefore when you send a lot of data to the printer or if you have multiple applications open and you print at the same time, this may happen. Unplug the printer from power outlet for 10 minutes and connect back again. Close other programs and try to print again.
  7. Software: If a particular software is not installed properly or is not complete then it may result in a crash when you try to start that software. You have to uninstall such software properly. Otherwise some entries may still be in the registry referring to that software and result in instability of the computer. You can use registry cleaning software to clean your registries frequently.
  8. Heat: Computers have inbuilt fans to cool down the processors. You can control the CPU speed from your BIOS settings. If the speed is set to higher than the normal CPU speed, this may result in overheating of the CPU which will result in Kernel Error.
  9. Power Supply: Use UPS to regulate the power supply to your computer. This will reduce the chances of your computer crashing.

Partition a Drive Without Losing Data

Wishes to partition your hard drives? But, partitioning a drive in windows will needed us toformat the drive. In this tutorial, I will teach you how to partition a drive without need to backup your data and format your drives. You might wonder if this trick need you  to downloadsome softwares or tools. Do not worry because this trick is 100% download-free. We just gonna use a built in windows tool.

This trick had been tested on Windows7 and Vista. I'm not sure that this trick will work onwindows XP. This trick allows you to partition any drive including system drives.

Okay, first of all open Run dialog box ( Start > Run ). Type in "diskmgmt.msc" without the quotes in the text box. Wait until Disk Management window pop up. It may take a few seconds to load. After it’s fully loaded, go to Storage > Disk management at the left sidebar. Now you could see a list of storage devices that are currently connected to your computer. Now choosethe drive that you want to partition. Right Click on it and select "Shrink Volume" option from menu.

The system will search for available space in your selected disk volume. A window will pop up asking you to wait while it loads. This will not take much longer than few seconds. Next the Shrink dialog box will pop-up. This is where you’ll have to specify the volume for next partition. Look at the total size of available shrink space. Below it, you’ll have to enter the space to shrink.

To make sure that you not losing any data, shrink size is not below the total size of space taken by files in that drive. You can check the used space by right clicking on the drive you are going to partition and choose "Properties" from the menu.

After done shrinking your drive. You can see an unallocated space in your shrunk drive. But you’ll still not able to access this new drive. You’ll have to format it and specify the drive letter to access them. Right click on unallocated drive and choose "New Simple Volume" option.

New Simple Volume Wizard Window will pop up. Click on "Next" button to continue. In next window, you’ll have to specify the size for your new volume. Set full size if you are satisfied with two partitions or you can divide it again for new partition. Next, choose any drive letter from the available list and click on "Next" button. In next window, leave everything as default but make sure it's similar to the screen below ( If you want to change the volume label, feel free to do it ).

Click on Finish window to complete the wizard. Go to My Computer and you can see your new drive. That is all. Hope this tutorial will help you. Enjoy.

Run any Operating System within Windows

Hi friends
This is my first post, and here I'm going to share a couple of new software and a technique called as virtualization.
First of all, I'm going to tell you what's the virtualization in short.
It basically have two parts, Hardware virtualization and Software virtualization.
With the help of virtualization, we can use multiple operating systems within Windows (Some softwares are platform independent also !).

Check out the Screenshot of all the software below.

The mainly used virtualization softwares in the market are,

Virtual Box
This is a free open source software, which helps you to install any operating system in Windows, Linux, Mac OS, DOS, OS/2, BSD, Solaris etc. This software will give you the better performance for the VM's installed in it.
Get this software at

http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Vmware Workstation
This is a paid software. The Vmware company discovered the concept of Virtual Machines and all this. But the performance of the virtual machines inside it is lower than that of Virtual Box (Tested on my laptop), & the installation is also heavy (around 600 MB).
Get a trial at

Wine for Linux
Wine is a free, open source application for running Windows software on operating systems that are normally not supported. With Wine, you can install and run these applications just like you would in Windows.
Get it at

http://www.winehq.org/

Parallels Desktop for Mac OS X
Parallels Desktop gives Mac users the ability to run Windows, Linux or any other operating system and their critical applications at the same time as Mac OS X on any Intel-powered Mac Pro, iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook etc.
Get it at
]
http://www.parallels.com/

Qemu
QEMU is a generic and open source machine emulator and virtualizer. It supports most common virtualization architecture pairings.
Get it at

http://wiki.qemu.org/Download

MobaLiveCD
MobaLiveCD is a freeware that will run your Linux LiveCD on Windows. With the help of it, we  can test various Linux flavors on Windows.
Get it at

http://mobalivecd.mobatek.net/en/

If any help about how to install a OS in your Windows without formatting hard disk is needed then just reply here.
Otherwise on good replies, I'll post a tutorial on Virtual Box or Vmware Workstation.

Enjoy !
